Mat Fraser’s Career

Mat was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada on January 25th, 1990. His parents, Don and Candace, were both former Olympic figure skaters. The family moved to the United States when Mat was a young boy.

Mat began lifting weights at the age of 12. After graduating from college, he trained full-time at the Olympic weightlifting training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was all set to compete at the world junior weightlifting champs in 2009 but injured his back. But Mat persevered and competed anyway. That led to a broken back and a year’s worth of rehab.

Around 2012, Fraser switched from weightlifting to CrossFit. In 2013 he began competing in local competitions around Vermont. His first CrossFit Games appearance was in 2014. He ended up in second place behind Rich Froning, who won it for the fourth straight year.

With Froning’s retirement, Mat was expected to win the 2015 Games. However, he was runner-up again, this time to Ben Smith.

Mat later made the following comment about his second place in 2015 …

I hated my 2015 medal. To me, it just represented the cut corners, the slacking off, the thinking I could out-train a bad diet. If I had won in 2015 while carrying those bad habits, I would’ve kept those bad habits. I would’ve thought I could do this while eating terribly. I can do this while training sporadically.

At the peak of his training, he was taking in between 6000 and 7000 calories per day, mainly made of lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.

Three Intense Facts About Mat Fraser

  • Matt Fraser used to get extremely nervous before competing in CrossFit. It was not abnormal for him to throw up before the competition. At times like this, he finds peace in the Serenity prayer that is tattooed on his left arm …

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

  • At the age of 10, Mat was heading for a life of drug and alcohol addiction. Even though he was a gifted athlete, he would turn up for training during his early teens hung over. At the age of 17, his father paired him up with a mentor who was a former addict. The experience shocked Mat into sobriety.
